Once the bid process was complete and new layouts were approved, it was time to get to work.
The end result was faithful to the design mockups. The file size of the home page alone was reduced by approximately fifty percent, and the load time for it on a 56K modem was almost halved. As a result of semantic XHTML and the separation of presentation from structure, it was much faster and easier for the staff to make updates. As well, potential legal liability was greatly mitigated by the improved accessibility features.
